Quizá sea lo primero que notamos en una persona o lo último que recordemos de ella, una piel con memoria que ha pasado de la oscuridad arrepentida, de las cárceles hasta las mesas privilegiadas de cualquier ciudad.
Un tema, un dolor, una adicción, un gusto, una actitud, una costumbre, de lo que tanto se ha hablado, se debate, se concluye, se juzga, se anhela, se reconsidera, se esconde y vuelve salir a la luz.
Cuatro personajes que habitan la piel neoyorkina nos cuentan sobre su poder de regresar en el tiempo y sus motivos para hacerlo.
Y además, sobre su supervivencia en esta ciudad, su inspiración, sus paseos por el parque y el anhelo de viajar por los 7 continentes antes de cumplir los 30.

¿Con qué palabra podrías definir tu tatuaje?
Cambio.
Como la espiral de la vida que hace que las cosas cambien y se regeneren perpetuamente, en realidad es un gancho, que para la cultura maori es un símbolo de prosperidad y abundancia. Para mí tiene ese doble significado, un símbolo de cambio y renacimiento a una vida próspera.
¿Hay alguna generación cultural (corriente artística) con la cual te sientas identificada?
No tengo una preferencia en especial, pero podría decir que el movimiento underground y su contracultura me genera gran atracción. Y quizá sea por eso que la ciudad de Nueva York me fascine tanto. El hecho de que haya sido en estas calles donde artistas e intelectuales de los ultimos 150 años encontraran un modo de expresarse con sus ideas rebeldes y avan-garde, criticando el establishment una y otra vez.
¿Si tuvieras la oportunidad de tener una conversación con algún personaje de esa generación, qué le preguntarías y que respuesta te imaginaries que te daría?
En el mismo contexto me imaginaría preguntarle a Joey Ramone: ¿me quedo o me voy?” y su respuesta probablemente sería “Allá tú chica”.
If you can describe your tattoo with one word, what’d it be? ..and why?
Change.
My Tattoo means to me a spiral, like the spiral of life that makes things change and regenerate them perpetually, but its real meaning is a hook, that’s for the maori culture is the symbol of prosperity and abundance. So, in my mind my tattoo has a mixed meaning of booth meanings, a symbol of change and reborn to a prosperous life.
Is there a cultural generation (artistic movement or moment in time) with which you feel identified?
I don’t have a particular preference for an artistic generation, but I can say that the underground and the contra culture generate on myself a big attraction, and maybe thats the reason why New York fascinate me so hard, the fact that on these streets the artists and intellectuals of the last 150 years have found a place where they can express their avant-garde and rebels ideas, criticizing the establishment once and another.
If you had the opportunity to have a conversation with any character of that generation, what would you ask and what answer would you imagine?
On the same context, I figure myself asking to Joey Ramone: Should I stay or should I go?, and he would probably answer me: It´s up to you, girl!

¿Con qué palabra podrías definir tu tatuaje?
Amor.
Decidí hacerme estas flores cuando mi padre murió. Cada una representa mis hermanos y yo, él esta enterrado en un pueblo cerca de la ciudad de México, y no sabía si me iba a ser posible visitar su tumba seguido, y quería que él supiera que siempre tendría flores para él.
Sobre NY ¿Qué tiene de nuevo Nueva York?

¿Qué secreto le has robado a la ciudad?
No creo que sea ningún secreto, pero en las visitas que he hecho a NY nunca había estado en el High Line Park, es increíble, disfruté mucho mi paseo por ese parque.
If you can describe your tattoo with one word, what’d it be? … and why?
Love. I Decided to get these flowers when my father passed away, each one represent my siblings and I. He is buried in a town near Mexico City, so I didn’t know if I was able to go and visit his grave very often so I wanted him to know that I will always had flowers for him.
What’s new about NY?
New Doughnut Plant, NY.
What secret(s) have you stolen from the city?
It’s no secret, but in many visits that I’ve made to NY I had never been before in the High Line, it’s amazing. I really enjoyed taking a walk there.

¿Cómo podrías describir tu trabajo creativo, en relación con tu vida diaria?
Siempre me han intrigado las manifestaciones culturales, empezando por la rudeza de las calles del Bronx y el hip hop que se derivó de ellas. Al ser un bboy y artista grafitero pude expresar mis emociones a través del baile y arte entonces. Ahora con la pintura, puedo encontrar la inspiración al ver un vagabundo acostado en un banco.
Si no te dedicaras al arte, ¿qué otra profesión-actividad te gustaría hacer?
Si no estuviera haciendo arte, probablemente hubiera continuado escribiendo musica… sólo tengo un amor por crear…
He tenido varias pasiones por el dibujo.. primero fue haciendo retratos en graffiti, despues continue con las artes graficas y tatuajes, no hay nada mas satisfactorio para mi que saber que una de mis piezas de arte estara plasmado en un cuerpo por siempre. Mis tatuajes son unicos, no me gusta usar diseños de otras personas. Siento que como artista puedo dibujar cualquier imagen y plasmarla en la piel.
Amo el arte!… y el mundo es mi canvas para llenarlo con eso.
¿Con qué palabra podrías definir tu tatuaje?
Exclusivo.
Cuando diseñe esta pieza, queria que fuera exclusiva. Pude haber hecho cualquier imagen, pero queria crear algo que la gente viera con asombro. Y pense “que puede captivar la mirada?”
La gente en comun se queda prendida de una imagen entre mas extraña sea esta.
Con eso en mente fue que empece a dibujar un mounstro con un solo diente rodeando su cabeza… encontre comico el concepto inicial y creo que mi ejecución fue buena…

If you were not a painter, what else would you like to do?
If I wasn’t doing art, I’d probably go forward with writing music. I guess I just have a love with creating any art…lol
I’ve had different passions with drawing.. First, of course was sketching portraits to doing graffiti. With in time I progressed to doing graphic arts and tattooing. I love tattooing, there’s nothing more satisfying to me then knowing that someone will have a piece of my art on their body thruOut there lifetime. My tattoos are unique, I don’t like using someone else’s design and inking it in a body. I feel, I’m an artist and I can easily draw up any image for skin and apply it.
I love art!…

If you can describe your tattoo with one word, what’d it be? … and why?
«Exclusive»
When I first designed this piece, I wanted it to exclusive. I could of easily drawn an image and placed it on my arm but I wanted people to see it and stare at it in amazement.
I thought, what’ll catch eyes? Normally, I’ve come to notice that the common person would get stuck on a image the more odd it is. So with that, I drew a monster with a single tooth wrapping around his whole head…lol. I laughed at the initial concept but I think I executed it ok..
How would you describe your creative work in relation to your daily life in NYC?
I always found myself intrigued on cultural lifestyle, what had me hooked was the rough streets of the Bronx especially hipHop. Being a bboy/graffiti artist I was able to express all my emotions thru dance and art. Even with me now I can use the image of a homeless man sleeping on a bench and by painting it I can create a piece of inspiration.

Naci en Queens pero fui criado en Florida, soy coleccionista de tennis, me dan miedo las arañas y mi deseo es viajar por los 7 continentes antes de cumplir los 30.
¿Qué secreto le has robado a la ciudad?
No crecí en Nueva York pero durante estos dos ultimos 2 años que he vivido aqui, puedo asegurar que uno debe de caminar rapido o quitarse del camino.
Si pudieras comparar el condado donde vives con alguna emoción, ¿cúal seria?
Cuando pienso en Queens, la palabra “amor” me viene a la mente. Es el condado con mas diversidad, y de alguna manera cada uno apoya al otro, gente de distintos lugares llevandose bien.. eso es amor. Habre sido criado en Florida, pero soy de Queens.
¿Con qué palabra podrías definir tu tatuaje?
Familia.
Todos mis tatuajes tienen relacion con la familia. Mi ultimo tatuaje son dos flores: orquidea y sampaguita. La orquidea es la flor favorita de mi mama. Y la sampaguita me recuerda a mi abuela, de chico recuerdo que ella hacia collares con esa flor. Le doy crédito a mi amiga Rowena por diseñarlo.

How was growing up on the streets of New York?
I didn’t grow up in NY but for the last couple of years that I’ve been here, I can def say that one must walk fast or get out of the way.
If you could compare the borough (you live in) with an emotion, what would it be your impression?
When I think of Queens, love comes to mind. It’s the most diverse borough and everyone supports each other in one way or the other. People from many different places getting along..now that’s love. I may be Florida raised, but I’m Queens born. Queens represent!!!
If you can describe your tattoo with one word, what’d it be? … and why?
Family.
All my tattoos are family oriented. I always wanted my family’s Coat of Arms. So I did some research on the Pascua last name and found my family’s Coat of Arms. I had it tattooed on my right arm. The next tattoo that I got was the word «lineage» on my wrist. My latest tattoo is on my left arm and are of two flowers, orchid and sampaguita. The orchid is my moms favorite flower. The sampaguita reminds me of my grandmother because when I was young, I used to watch her make necklaces out of that flower. I give credit to my friend Rowena for designing both my «lineage» and «orchid/sampaguita» tattoos.
